Kindness

April 10, 2020 by Sheila Siler

According to Miriam-Webster.com – Kindness is defined as:

  1. the quality or state of being kind
  2. a kind deed :FAVOR
  3. archaic: AFFECTION

Synonyms are: benevolence, boon, courtesy, favor, grace, indulgence, mercy, service, turn

In life kindness is sometimes viewed as being manipulative (“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.” Proverbs 25:22 and also Romans 12:20).

Sometimes it’s used as a reason to deliver uncomfortable news (“it’s actually a kindness to tell them the truth and not let them believe a lie”) or to excuse a cruel or mean action (“I’m just putting them out of their misery”). I don’t believe this is kindness at all. It might be necessary at times (like cleaning out a wound), but don’t call it kindness.

I believe that kindness (see definition above) goes a long way in life. Whether it originates from a pure heart or a manipulative attitude – if received at face value, kindness still results in a smile and a warm feeling inside. I try to accept any kindness shown to me and believe the best of people.

I try to be kind. Sometimes I have a pure heart, sometimes I am acting out of obligation, and sometimes I am indeed attempting to “heap coals of kindness”. I pray that God will help me with the pure heart and clean out the other attitudes. I hope that people won’t question my motives and just accept and enjoy whatever kindness I might send their way.

Kindness – it’s always in fashion.

A little kindness can go a long way. And really make someone’s day!
