Chocolate and Lent
If I get grouchy, forgive me, I’ve given up chocolate for Lent! This is a first for me, I’ve never given anything up for Lent before. Growing up a pentecostal, Lent was something only catholics did (or that’s what I thought). A few years ago we started going to an Evangelical Covenant church, who observes Ash Wednesday (again – I thought only catholics did that) and I participated for the first time. I found I liked the short yet solemn service – but frankly it didn’t stay with me until Easter. So this year I decided to give up something for Lent. It was a bit challenging to find something that was both truly sacrificial and yet not over the top that I knew I wouldn’t keep (some of my friends are giving up all sweets, coffee, or favorite radio dj’s. My husband suggested I give up Facebook . . .). So chocolate it is. My thinking is that I LOVE chocolate – so by giving it up it will be a constant reminder of this season leading up to Easter.
I will be curious to see if Easter becomes more meaningful for me this year. I’ll let you know.
If I were to give up the most important thing in my life right now it would have to be all of the kids in my life. Of course there is no way for that to be possible but, you have given me a reason to question things. Thanks Sis.
