I’m a little uncomfortable with all the attention that comes with Mother’s Day. I LOVE being a mom, but I feel my kids love on regularly and my husband’s appreciation all the time. I do like having my mother-in-law over to share lunch with us and I am grateful for the memories of my own mom (who passed away 4 years ago). I just don’t need all the “stuff” for myself. Thankfully we established from the beginning just cards, lunch with everyone, and no gifts (though one year I did get a deck lounger).

So when I first heard of a supermodel calling for moms to “ignore” Mother’s Day, I thought “cool”. Maybe women are ready to step down from so much attention. Let’s donate the money we’d spend on cards and lunch and jewelry to the March of Dimes or the Mother Teresa Charitable Trust. But then I read what it was really about and decided “not so cool”. Ignore Mother’s Day to advocate safe abortions around the globe? I don’t think so. Somehow I just can’t put Mother’s Day and abortions together.

Everyone I know appreciates a good mother. They either appreciate it because they had one and are grateful or they didn’t have one and wish they had.
