About me

3My life has always been about change, even when I didn’t know it. The one constant has been God. My faith journey began when I was a young child, and though it has at times taken some unexpected twists and turns, I have learned that God is always with me.

I am the third of four children. My brothers were 11 and 9 when I was born, and then 9 years later our sister was born.  The four of us have never lived together at one time. I’ve been the baby, the middle child, and then the oldest. I identify with almost every birth order personality trait.

Sheila 1When I was five my father went into full-time vocational ministry (that means he pastored churches and worked a regular job too). Living in five states and ten towns and attending twelve schools by the time I graduated from high school, I learned to say hello and goodbye quite well. I also learned to love traveling, that people are pretty much the same wherever you go, and I developed a thirst for new experiences.

With television a consistency in my transient life, I idolized close-knit, multi-generational family settings such as the Walton’s (kind of an old-fashioned Braverman family (Parenthood) for those of you under the age of 40) and dreamed of having that kind of life someday. I also truly believed that by the time I grew up I’d have the option of living on the moon thanks to Captain Kirk and Star Trek.

January 2016In 1986 I moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. My transient lifestyle ended when I married my husband in 1989. He became a “constant” in my life. With our opposite personalities (I’m easy-listening and a rule-follower, he’s alternative music and a boundary-pusher), our incredible relationship defies explanation. We settled down, had three children, and I am happy to call North Carolina home. While I don’t have the family scenario I fantasized about, I have something better. I have my family, with all its quirks, eccentricities, delights, and flaws. I’ve quit longing for someone else’s life, especially one that is artificially created. Real life doesn’t come with script writers, lighting directors, and make-up artists.

I do enjoy a good, hot, gooey brownie (with or without a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream). I really like sitting on the sand staring at the ocean, having adventurous vacations with my family, and reading books. Most of all I love being with my husband, living life, and sharing my thoughts with you.
