Easily Distracted

I read with interest a blog post over at A Wicked Stepmother is Born this morning. You should read it, it’s all about the need to take 30 seconds for yourself in the midst of the regular chaos of life.
I understood her post completely. While I think my circumstances are different, the results are much the same.
I am easily distracted. A conversation with my husband, debates with my kids, a good television show – many things derail me from my good intentions. Perhaps if I were a Type A personality much more would get done, but I’m not. The problem, (for me) as I see it, is other people. No matter how detailed my plan for success, it rarely allows for the variable of other people.
Plans look good on paper, making them work in reality is another issue.
Lest you think I am beating myself up, let me assure you I am not. I like who I am and love my life. I just need to “tweak” things to get to the goals I am setting.
Expect the next few days of posting to reflect this. Perhaps this will encourage you to address some questions in your own life. Let’s grow together.
I'm not Type A, but I do know how to focus on one thing at a time. I just tune out all else. It's not always a plus, though – just ask my wife! I know how to ignore all sorts of things…
I'm a pretty determined person, but I do fight with bouts of procrastination and episodes from the first season of Glee. I write down a list every morning, and do my best to accomplish all my goals. If something gets pushed off, I add it to the next day. Eventually, the less important things I've pushed get completed. I know who I am and I've learned to give myself a break. There's no need to run around like a chicken with my head cut off. Sometimes you just need to enjoy those people who alter our plans. Great post! Thanks for sharing.
When I feel myself getting distracted I grab a pen and paper and write a note to think about it later. My brain can only hold so much stuff. I also take little stretching and singing breaks throughout the day. Breathing deeply helps clear away the cobwebs.
I, of course have found the answer to this dilemma, and of course am ready to share it with the world. The answer is… Oh look! a squirrel! 🙂

Sheila,
I totally understand being distracted, it happens to my husband all the time! 🙂 (okay me too..) Thanks for the shout out to my blog.
I understand the need to tweak things to get goals accomplished. In my head I have this brilliant idea that I will create a plan that uses a schedule that includes writing, reading, reviewing, house-cleaning, studying and paying attention to my family and it will all mesh together and create a lovely flow in life…and then I decide to bake cookies, read a book, watch On-Demand, take a nap, get a pedicure…and well you get the idea…. Sorry I just mini-blogged in your comments, I'm kinda wordy these days…err…most days. Thanks for the encouragement!
Before children I was very focused, could multi task so well that I knew each little detail of all I was doing, and was always well aware of what was next on the mental list.
Now I have bits of paper all over the place with reminders. I multi task, but much differently (read: cook dinner while referring a fight, listening to the washer ding at me that the cycle is finished and all that other fun stuff)
I get distracted easily these days…
