Erma and Me
My husband’s aunt paid me a great compliment in her Christmas card this year, she said my writing reminded her of Erma Bombeck. I love Erma Bombeck. I decided to do a little research and found this great website devoted to her – she has her own museum! Erma was born February 21, 1927 and died April 2, 1996 at the age of 69.
While I would never presume to compare myself to Erma (I don’t have her sense of humor), I do consider her a role model as to honesty and transparency in writing.
Here is my favorite quote by Erma:
I love this quote because it encourages me to “spend it all”, to not leave anything behind. I don’t want to leave this world fresh and rested, but used up and tired (at a ripe old age of course). This doesn’t mean not taking care of myself and being reckless, but I want to be adventurous and take all the opportunities that come my way. Opportunities and adventures come in many shapes and sizes (read some of Erma’s choices and you’ll see). The trick is in recognizing them.
What opportunity do you have in front of you today?
That was a nice compliment! And Emma's quote is awesome. If we use everything, then we'll hear the words "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Erma Bombeck was amazing. I was still in high school (although only barely) when she passed away, and my mother had only just started to let me read her books. I think I cried for an hour when I heard she was gone!
